Welcome back to our blog! Here at the Admission Office we have decided to start a new format for our blog post. Every Monday and Thursday will feature a new blog post by a guest writer. Anyone from students, faculty or staff may appear as writers. Look for our all new post every week as we ask people ‘what do you think?’

It is eleven o’clock on a brisk Fall Saturday morning. I have just gotten off the E-Train at 5th Avenue and am making my way to Rockefeller Center (also known as 30 Rock) for another long day working on one of television’s lngest running shows.
I am working as an intern in the Music Department of NBC’s Saturday Night Live. Dozens of people are coming together today to help put on ninety minutes of live television- and I get to be right in the middle of it!
This semester has taught me to appreciate all the hard work that goes into television production. It is so easy to sit down on the couch, press a button and watch a show. No one ever thinks of the hundreds of people working day and night in order to bring that to you.
Although Saturday Night Live is run on Saturdays, people are working all week long in order to have ninety minutes of television by the weekend. From the writers and actors who come up with thirty to fifty orinigal scripts each week, to the set and costume desginers who are making minute changes until the airing of the show, to the musicians who are writing and rehearsing the music for every second of the show- it’s really incredible!
I now know, from personal experience, how much running around there has to be done for everything to run smoothly. Snatching copies of music from the office on the seventeenth floor and bringing it down to the band on the eighth floor. Or rounding up Adele’s twelve-piece string orchestra and herding them up two floors, through Sarah Palin’s secret servicemen, to the stage- that is only one part of one job out of hundreds that must be working perfectly in order for the show to make it off the ground.
This experience has been really great for me. I was able to get a glimpse of what I could be doing after I graduate. I now have a better idea of what direction I would like to go in and I can concentrate my education on that path.

Week One–Complete

Good Morning!

Some how Mondays seem to come so quickly and last so long! I am not quite sure why Mondays are dreaded by some students, faculty and staff but my guess today is that it has something to do with the temperature being 2 degrees at 8 am. Cold weather is a part of the territory in Albion Michigan, but 2 seems a little unnecessary.

This weekend on campus activities served as a welcome back committee to students. The Union Board on campus, which serves as the entertainment planning organization on campus, hosted Jay Black, a comedian from New Jersey. The show seemed to have went well as I noticed there were no seats left on the floor of the Kellogg Center and very little sitting and standing room in the balcony area. Jay was a former English teacher with some laugh inducing jokes about his former students. On Saturday night the Union Board filled the Kellogg Center again, this time with free ice cream, lip gloss, make your own t-shirts and street signs. I had no idea that making your own lip gloss was so easy and smells so delicious! I had never heard of making your own street signs but they went over so well the line was around and out of the Stack (which is the floor in the Kellogg Center where events are hosted). Students could also put their face in a picture which was transferred to a t-shirt. I am now the proud owner of a t-shirt depicting a 1950s arranged marriage scene.

Sundays around Albion always seem to pass slowly and softly. Sometimes they even pass without the scheduled morning alarm. Our campus host one dining hall for all students on board. With the new expanded addition, Baldwin as well all call it, became a place for reading and coffee breaks on Sunday since the first week of classes is over and students are beginning to dive into their assignments and reading list. Our dining hall includes several large screen televisions, individual booths complete with their own flat screen and fair trade organic coffee. Other parts of the campus were quite on Sunday as students evaluated and avoided the freezing cold temperatures outside.

Ah, the spring semester at Albion College begins.

Welcome to the Albion College Admission blog!

This blog was created by current Albion College students for prospective students as a way to keep the prospective students connected with Albion’s campus. Part of the purpose of the blog is to create dialog with prospective students which allows the Admission office to become a part of a student’s college search.

This blog and its content is written by current Albion students, including myself who serves as an intern to the Admission office this spring 2009 semester. We appreciate comments, suggestions and other discussion topics from both current members of the Albion community as well as prospective students and parents. Feel free to leave us comments with questions so we can continue to assist in connecting people to Albion.

Our blog is ever evolving as our hope is that the blog becomes a source of information and knowledge about our campus. We are continuing to develop innovative ways to connect with students, faculty, staff and parents.

For now we look forward to communicating with you!
