This week’s show features Markeese Boyd, a first-year Albion College student and member of the Build Albion Fellows. Markeese comes from the city of Albion, and was selected as one of the first Build Albion Fellows. With that, he’s worked with his fellow students to help improve the community. Markeese talks about his first semester at college, bonding with the other Build Albion Fellows, and how – even when you go to school in the same town you grew up in – it can still seem like a world away.

Town & Gown 12: Rev. Donald Phillips

Reverend Donald Phillips, faith leader at Lewis Chapel AME Church in Albion, is now the acting chaplain of Albion College after serving as the faith community liaison last semester.

Rev. Phillips,together with his wife, Rev. Dr. Teleah Young-Hamilton, ’04, has served in the Albion community for more than 10 years, and leads the local ministerial association.

This episode of Town & Gown features Rev. Phillips talking about his transitioning roles, guiding college students, and signs of hope in the Albion community.

Town & Gown 11: Gregg Strand and Danielle Nelson

This week’s show features Gregg Strand, Albion College’s director of corporate and foundation relations, and Danielle Nelson, a junior at the College, who tackled a summer research project on regional trail systems.

Together, with local government and community organizations, they secured an almost $300,000 grant from the Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund to connect three regional trail systems in Albion – the Iron Belle Trail, the Great Lake-to-Lake Trail, and the North Country Trail.

Town & Gown 9: President Mauri Ditzler Phonecast

President Mauri Ditzler spoke with alumni from around the country in a live call-in event on Tuesday, Dec. 1, during which he provided an Albion College update and shared exciting news from both the campus and town.

Steve Klein, vice president for enrollment management, and Matt Arend, director of athletics, joined the president on the call, and members of the College’s Institutional Advancement team took questions from alumni participants.

Carles Sommerour, a senior Communication Studies major at Albion College, grew up in Albion, and decided to stick around town and attend college after making a connection with Albion students.

Carles worked with the seven Build Albion Fellows students over this past summer, and thinks a lot about how to make his hometown better. He talks about all that, as well as his desire to stick around and continue to help Albion even after he graduates.

Town & Gown 2: President Mauri Ditzler

This week’s Town & Gown Podcast episode features president of Albion College, Dr. Mauri Ditzler. President Ditzler talks about the college and community relationship — especially in the year that he’s been on the job.

Dr. Ditzler became president of Albion College in July 2014. In his first year, he’s reached out to community members in Albion for ideas on how to revitalize the town. He’s also brought some of his own ideas, and we’ll talk about those, too.

Dr. Ditzler comes to Albion from Monmouth College in Illinois, where he was the president for nine years. Before that, he was a dean and a chemistry professor. A true midwesterner, Mauri and his wife, Judy, own an apple orchard in his home state of Indiana.

Alex Carroll, ’03, went from a Midwestern chemistry major at Albion College to an actor in Hollywood, starring in movies such as The Work and the Glory and Marvel’s latest Agent Carter TV show on ABC.

Our talk with Alex focuses on becoming a Hollywood actor, starring in Marvel’s “Agent Carter” TV series, and what he’s learned in the acting world. Alex was on campus to talk to a group of prospective students about his Albion experience and the power of the liberal arts.
