This week’s show features Markeese Boyd, a first-year Albion College student and member of the Build Albion Fellows. Markeese comes from the city of Albion, and was selected as one of the first Build Albion Fellows. With that, he’s worked with his fellow students to help improve the community. Markeese talks about his first semester at college, bonding with the other Build Albion Fellows, and how – even when you go to school in the same town you grew up in – it can still seem like a world away.

Town & Gown 13: Nancy Doyal, Bohm Theatre

This week’s show features Nancy Doyal, director of the Bohm Theatre in downtown Albion. Now in it’s first full year of operation, after a years-long renovation project, the Bohm Theatre has hosted everything from concerts to speeches to ‘Star Wars.’

Nancy makes all that run smoothly, and looks for ways to put more people in the seats for the upcoming year — all while keeping a sane personal schedule. She talks about how the community supports the theater, and what’s next for the Bohm.

Bringing Back the Bohm documentary

Town & Gown 11: Gregg Strand and Danielle Nelson

This week’s show features Gregg Strand, Albion College’s director of corporate and foundation relations, and Danielle Nelson, a junior at the College, who tackled a summer research project on regional trail systems.

Together, with local government and community organizations, they secured an almost $300,000 grant from the Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund to connect three regional trail systems in Albion – the Iron Belle Trail, the Great Lake-to-Lake Trail, and the North Country Trail.

Town & Gown 10: Cliff Harris, Blues at the Bohm

Albion College chemistry professor Cliff Harris, who, along with his wife (and communication studies professor) Karen Erlandson, launched a monthly concert series at the Bohm Theatre called Blues at the Bohm.

Cliff, a musician and performer himself, now finds himself in the role of concert organizer and promoter, all for the good of Albion’s nightlife. And he’s had a lot of help along the way.

Town & Gown 7: Maddie Drury, ’15

This week’s episode of Town & Gown features Maddie Drury, a 2015 graduate of Albion College who now serves as the assistant director of community programming. Maddie took on the Big Read and Build Albion Fellows projects in her first months on the job, and it was her sociology major at Albion that turned her on to community development.

Maddie talks about the hard work of collaboration, the slow work of development, and important work of connecting students with the Albion community.

Mae Ola Dunklin, a former educator and principal in the Albion Public Schools, and director of Albion College’s Shurmur Center for Teacher Development, talks about serving on the Big Read committee, and all the excitement surrounding the activities.

Mae Ola serves on many other boards and committees in the community, including the Albion College board of trustees. Through her work with the Big Read, Mae Ola looks to improve literacy in the community. Albion’s Big Read is taking place through the month of October, and we talked the day before the kick-off event.

Trisha Franzen, Albion College women’s and gender studies professor, talks about the Wildcat Garden, a community project that gets local kids involved in gardening.

The project also gets Albion College students out in the community, getting their hands dirty with the kids, picking vegetables, and learning more about the town.

Trisha Franzen likes to teach her students about food, and is a noted Anna Howard Shaw scholar.

Town & Gown 2: President Mauri Ditzler

This week’s Town & Gown Podcast episode features president of Albion College, Dr. Mauri Ditzler. President Ditzler talks about the college and community relationship — especially in the year that he’s been on the job.

Dr. Ditzler became president of Albion College in July 2014. In his first year, he’s reached out to community members in Albion for ideas on how to revitalize the town. He’s also brought some of his own ideas, and we’ll talk about those, too.

Dr. Ditzler comes to Albion from Monmouth College in Illinois, where he was the president for nine years. Before that, he was a dean and a chemistry professor. A true midwesterner, Mauri and his wife, Judy, own an apple orchard in his home state of Indiana.
