Musclewood

Carpinus caroliniana Walter – Betulaceae – birch family

This native species is an uncommon street tree in Albion.  The smooth, sinuous bark is the source of the common name, musclewood.  The tree also is known by the common names blue beech and ironwood.  The wood is reported to be very hard.

Two nice young specimens of this species were planted in 2011 in front of the Albion District Library in honor of retiring librarian Colleen Verge.  The nicest tree lawn specimens we have seen in town are located near the W end of E Chestnut Street.
