River birch is a species native to the eastern U.S., but not Michigan.  Its northernmost natural populations are in Indiana.  In Albion, it is an uncommon street tree.

Michigan ice storms are hard on this species.  A tree on the Albion College quad was lost when it broke apart under the weight of ice.
