Turkish Filbert

Corylus colurna L. – Betulaceae – birch family

Turkish filbert, also known as Turkish hazel or Turkish hazelnut, is an uncommon street tree in Albion.  It is native to SE Europe and W Asia, but makes a great street tree here because it is relatively drought tolerant and disease resistant.  The edible nuts have thick shells and are contained in clusters of deeply divided modified leaves (bracts).

Great examples of this species are located near the W end of Center Street.
