9/11 Memorial Service

September 11, 2011: Reconciliation Place, Commonwealth Park

The American Embassy in Canberra hosted a memorial service that included remarks from the US Ambassador and the Australia Prime Minister.  Here are just a few photos of the service, which lasted about an hour in the pouring rain.

The official party included the US Ambassador to Australia, Jeff Bleich (3rd from left) and Australia's Prime Minister, Julia Gillard (5th from left).

The Australian Federal Police Pipes and Drums played a variety of traditional bagpipe music and the American and Australian national anthems.

Hundreds of people, including 70+ dignitaries, gathered for the ceremony.

Candles lit in tribute to those lost in 9/11.

Ambassador Bleich gave the final remarks, after a bagpipe rendition of "Amazing Grace" and a moment of silence. The band marched off to "Waltzing Matilda".
