In honor of Women’s History Month…

Lucy Anthony, Shaw’s companion of 30 years, described this photo as “taken by Underwood and Underwood of New York at the time of one of the great parades there–I am not sure of the year.  Dr. Shaw had marched at the head of the procession all the way up Fifth Avenue and was reviewing it at Columbus Circle. The marchers were in divisions–business women, professional, educational–including teachers, of course. When Dr. Shaw saw this division approaching she hailed and greeted their approach by waving the palm. I consider it one of her most wonderful pictures.”

Albion College Special Collections has a collection of papers devoted to Anna Howard Shaw. For more information, see the finding aid. Look forward to a longer article and more images from the collection in the March issue of “A Day in the Life.”
