For the first Odd Topic’s Luncheon of the year, the librarians are giving a history of the library. To go along with theme, I thought it would be fun to pull out some old photos of the library for the first blog post of the year. If you’re on campus September 26 at noon, come to the Mary Sykes Room to hear and share stories. Either way, enjoy!

The Stockwell Memorial Library groundbreaking ceremony, circa 1938.
-
-
Prior to the Mudd building (built in 1981), the Stockwell Memorial Library stood on its own.
-
-
When Madelon Stockwell gave the money to building the library, she stipulated that the college display her mother’s furniture for all time. You can now see the furniture in the archives (located on Mudd Level 3).

When the Stockwell library first opened, the tiers were accessible to employees only. Hence, the large green doors are behind the desk and closed.
-
-
When students ordered up a book, they would read it in the reserves room. When they finished, an employee would reshelve it in the tiers.
-
-
Although much has changed in the last 75 years, the large green doors and columns are still recognizable.
-
-
When the librarians opened the tiers, they quickly became a favorite study spot on campus.

Students have always made themselves comfortable while studying in the library!
